Anniversary Road Trip

It was our 10th anniversary on Sunday so we decided to hook up the Scamp and head out for a weekend trip to the north shore of Lake Superior. We are 60 miles from the north shore, but it takes about an hour and a half to drive there down Hwy 1. We left right after Steve got off work on Friday and we stopped at a little state forest campground right off Hwy 1.

We unhooked the camper and drove to the New Scenic Cafe which is southwest along Hwy 61 toward Duluth. We had a blue cheese with fig, walnut, and maple syrup appetizer. Steve had a steak and I had the seared scallops.

The next day was up Hwy 61 to Grand Marais. After a little shopping, we stopped at our favorite lunch spot, the Gunflint Tavern.

We just love the steamed mussels in a pesto wine broth accompanied by a frothy mug of beer!

On to more shopping and site seeing. We found a baseball field to throw Tansee's Frisbee. The fall colors are in full swing and the weather was just gorgeous! We thought we would see evidence of the Pagami Creek fire, but we didn't see, nor did we smell any fire. Here is a silly store that is a landmark in Grand Marais.

Dinner was at the Crooked Spoon. Our appetizer was blue crab cakes with firecracker jicama slaw and cilantro oil. Steve had seared scallops and pan flashed calamari with a light roasted tomato coulis and saffron and sweet pea risotto. I had the special which was a Black Angus rib-eye seared with a port wine demi glace over buttermilk blue cheese Yukon gold potatoes. It was all very yummy. Tansy even got a doggy bag! She LOVED it.

Back to the camper for a nice fire and glass of wine.

We drove back to our place in the morning (we call it the luxury campsite) and took a nice bike ride. The afternoon was spent enjoying this fantastic weather, a bobber in the lake, a glass of wine, and watching young loons splash and flap across the water.

To top it all off, we got to watch the Packer game! We ate smoked fish that we brought back from the shore along with a fresh loaf of bread that I made by combining two methods (I'll tell you about that later this week).

Perfect weekend. Perfect anniversary!

  1. Wow, how nice! I'm mostly a city girl, but I would have loved a retreat like that. How romantic!
